City Puts Developers On Notice For Big Housing Project In Hell's Kitchen
The city has put out an open call to developers for a new project in Hell’s Kitchen that involves bulldozing most of a block and putting in several hundred apartments, retail space and a new 150k SF home for a nonprofit that currently owns much of the property.
The New York City Economic Development Corp is expected to reveal its plans for the bidding process today. The site in question lies on 10th Avenue, between 40th and 41st streets, Crain's reports.
Covenant House New York, a nonprofit that provides shelter, education and employment assistance to homeless adolescents, has owned three buildings on the site since the '70s.
Hell’s Kitchen has come a long way since then, and Covenant is hoping that turnaround will help it snag a swanky new HQ in exchange for the apartments developers will be able to put up as part of the project.
The city will also take over an adjacent building formerly owned by Hunter College and add it to the development site as part of the deal.
Early plans call for roughly 700 apartments, with 40% of those earmarked as affordable, in addition to retail space and a portion of the block that must be set aside for a future No. 7 train Subway stop. [Crain’s]
