3) A Fair Share of the Tech Pie

New York

Manhattan south of Chambers Street now houses about 600 tech firms, a transition from Wall Street to wired, says Alliance for Downtown New York's Nicole LaRusso. From January through August, those companies raised $231M in venture capital, 14% of the city's total tech VC raised. Lower rents than in Midtown and Midtown South certainly help, but so does infrastructure, which accelerated as a result of post-Sandy rebuilding. Nicole says Downtown has the most advanced fiber optic network in the country, and now public space from Broadway to the East River offers free WiFi. (Ignoring people just got even harder. Good luck, hermits.)
