BISNOW REPORTER SAYS WHAT?
8 Train, March 2012
Is this what Journey means by a midnight train going annnnyyyywhere? Because we’re not exactly sure where this 8 train is heading. Bisnow deputy national editor Amanda Marsh caught this rare sight at Times Square last week (luckily, it got her to her actual destination and not some mythical location like New Jersey). The 8 train hasn’t made any official appearances since 1973, when it was last used to denote trains running along the now-demolished Third Avenue El. (It ran between 149th Street and Gun Hill Road in the Bronx.) Even though this subway car postdates that service—R62As were delivered in the mid-'80s—the MTA included 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 on the roll signs in case the routings were ever needed. (The 9, you may remember, was used for skip-stop service with the 1 on the Seventh Avenue line until 2005.)
