RAISING THE INDUSTRIAL BAR
Pete Zantal, Russell Held, and Tim Lizura in Newark on Oct. 18, 2011
Over the past decade, the Port Authority of NY & NJ has spent$2.1B ($248M this year alone) rebuilding its ports, terminals, and intermodal facilities to position itself as one of the East Coast's mega ports (with Miami and Virginia), general manager Pete Zantal told uslast night at JLL's port trends event in Newark (here, he joins Virginia Port Authority exec director Russell Held and and New Jersey Economic Development Authority's Tim Lizura). The next hurdle: raising the 80-year-old Bayonne Bridge's 151'-high roadway, too low for today's ships, to 215'—costing $1B. The Coast Guard will start environmental permitting at the end of the month, and the project should be done by 2016.
