SHIP SHAPE REDEVELOPMENT
SS United States
Here’s a unique redevelopment opportunity—the SS United States Redevelopment Project has issued a RFQ to repurpose the historic American ocean liner SS United States. What it seeks: a developer to refurbish and transform the 650k SF ship into a for-profit, self-sustaining, multi-purpose stationary waterfront attraction, which will be potentially docked in either its home port of New York or Miami (other cities will be considered). That could mean hotel, restaurants, event space, retail, and education facilities; plans also include a museum and the restoration of the ship’s most iconic features. New Canaan Advisors will advise the team leading the redevelopment; a developer will be selected by the end of the year, with the intent of placing the ship in the selected city by summer 2013. The ship, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of its maiden voyage this year, remains the largest passenger vessel ever constructed in the US (that’s 1,000 feet long) and is one of the last great 20th century ocean liners to survive.
