THE CASE OF THE MISSING STATUE SOLVED
November 1, 2012
Colliers' Richard Warshauer mans the megaphone on Saturday in Hanover Square next to Herzfeld & Rubin's James Kaplan during their annual walking tour of Lower Manhattan, sponsored by the Museum of American Finance. The duo was tempted to cancel last year's tour because of the Halloween blizzard, but the 13 attendees who braved the weather wouldn't hear of it. This year, Hurricane Sandy stayed at bay long enough to allow their 25th consecutive tour to continue, with 35 joining. What have we learned since Wall Street's 1987 Great Crash? "Absolutely nothing," Richard says. Just replace Kidder Peabody's Joe Jett ($250M loss) with JPMorgan Chase's London Whale ($6B) and we're right where we were 25 years ago. |
Richard also tells us he's been rattling the NYC Parks Department for eight years about the statue of Mayor Abraham De Peyster that was removed from Hanover Square in '04 (above) to make room for a memorial garden for British victims of Sept. 11, 2001. It's been in a Randall's Island warehouse since, but Richard finally just got word about Abraham's fate. He'll rise again soon at the northern end of City Hall Park. |
