Tasting the UWS
May 24, 2010
Friday evening, we joined the Columbus Avenue BID for the âDivine Dessertsâ portion of its third annual New Taste of the Upper West Side, a three-part event that highlights over 40 local chefs (like famed pastry chef Jacques Torres), 20 wineries, and cocktail masters under a tent on 77th and Columbus's schoolyard. Event chairman and restaurateur Don Evans (Compass and Dovetail) and BID executive director Barbara Adler were happy with the turnout, nearly 1.7K Upper West Siders, foodies, tourists, and restaurant devotees. All proceeds from this year's main events will replace the chain link fence around the schoolyard with an organic living fence, designed by architect Richard Dattner. |
Alexander Marketing's Linda Alexander and Tar Beaty flank Rosa Mexicano owner and BID prez Doug Griebel (check out those nifty wine glass holders). Linda, vice chair of Community Board 7, tells us that even during the downturn, retail along Columbus Avenue—from 67th to 82nd—remained 98% occupied (before the BID started in '98, it was only 50% occupied). Sponsoring the event were prominent local RE firms, including The Corner at 200 West owner The Gotham Org., Columbus Square owners The Chetrit Group and Stellar Management, and Argo Residential. The event also hosted an all-star panel that benefited non-profit Wellness in the Schools, featuring NY1's Elizabeth Kaledin, Food Network's Ellie Krieger,Food & Wine Magazine's Kate Krader, Dovetail's John Fraser, Telepan's Bill Telepan, NY Post's Steve Cuozzo, nutritional medicine expert Dr. Joel Fuhrman, and School Support Services' Eric Goldstein. |
