Touch of Class
Back-to-school season has made us nostalgic, so yesterday morning we headed to NYC Network Group’s panel discussion at The Williams Club for a lesson in Investment 101 (and with 100 attendees, it brought us back to those packed university seminars). Our teachers: Sperry Van Ness Butler Kane’s Marilyn Kane; EZKR’s Douglas Ruttenberg; Heritage Realty Service’s George Constantin; Poles, Tublin Stratakis, & Gonzales’ John Stratakis; ARS Abstract’s John Kazazis; and Haveland Estastes’ Philip Restifo; here with ARS Abstract’s Anthony Kazazis, the group’s director, and ABS Partners’ Mary Anderson-Gallagher, moderator.
Touch of Class
The group touched on all facets of investment, including the initial decision, financing, legal issues, title insurance, and investment criteria. Some takeaways: know what you want to invest in—make sure to look at occupancy, what financing is available, what interests you, and the geographies you’d like to be in; smaller investors might want to look into triple-net deals. Learn the advantages and disadvantages of an LLC versus an S corp before investing. Contingency contracts are extremely important, and you need to be careful how they’re drafted. (More photos)
