YESTERDAY WITH NYCREW, NRC & YREBNY
June 24, 2009
Lady Liberty inspires, but when Bisnow needs motivation, we seek a room full of women of achievement. We dropped by GE Real Estate yesterday morning to hear Deloitte vice chair of real estate Dorothy Albert address NYCREW at the network’s first of three summer breakfast series on “Leading Ladies of New York Real Estate.” |
Dorothy (bottom, center) with NYCREW board members, clockwise: Eurohypo AG’s Jo Hastings, Fidelity National Title’s Isabelle Pullis, GE’s Kathleen Carey, prez-elect Sharon Khurdan, and prez Liz Muskat of Ferzan, Robbins & Associates. In ’82, Dorothy thought the easy part would be graduating and finding a job, not realizing how bad unemployment was (worse than today). At the event, she chronicled her career, from the development team at Jersey City’s Harborside in the late ‘80s to her rise to the top at Deloitte, even after being told she would only be kept for the short-term. |
Of course, no good story is without gratuitous roadbumps (well, that’s what Lifetime and Hallmark movies tell us). Her takeaway? Don’t be afraid to take risks and stretch outside your comfort zone; the best time to look for opportunity is when you’re at your peak and not complacent; and, help each other. You need both inside and outside perspectives with your “personal board of directors.” (More photos) |
