NYC Unions Protest Related Chairman Stephen Ross, Targeting His Role As Dolphins Owner
New York City union workers are ratcheting up the pressure on Related and its use of nonunion labor at Hudson Yards, with plans to picket at National Football League headquarters.
The protest, planned for Wednesday, will target company chairman and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, Crain’s New York Business reports.
The protestors are railing against Related’s use of some nonunion workers at the Hudson Yards megaproject and are calling for Ross to be removed from a league-organized committee to promote social-justice issues.
The group expects thousands of unionized workers to converge on 345 Park Ave. Wednesday afternoon.
The group, which has joined together as #CountMeIn, claim Ross has condoned “racism, sexism and union-busting at the massive Hudson Yard project as well as other Related construction projects."
In March, Related sued the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, an umbrella group for construction unions, and its president, Gary LaBarbera, claiming they violated Hudson Yards' Project Labor Agreement, describing it as "not worth the paper it's printed on."
Earlier this month, the developer reached a deal with the New York District Council of Carpenters to raise the number of its trade workers at 50 Hudson Yards, The Real Deal reported.
The move was considered to be a setback to other unions that have been trying to get Related to agree to a project labor agreement.
