NYU Langone Plans $84M Outpatient Surgery Center In Brooklyn
Hospital system NYU Langone — Brooklyn is planning a major addition to its surgery facilities.
The hospital plans to add an $83.7M ambulatory surgical center to its campus in the Sunset Park neighborhood, in order to lessen the burden on the hospital's 11 surgery rooms. When the new facility is completed, those 11 will become entirely focused on inpatient procedures, Crain's New York reports.
The outpatient center will be at 5610 Second Ave. and contain six surgery rooms, covering procedures in fields such as orthopedics, ophthalmogy, otolaryngology, vascular surgery and breast surgery. The existing system at the hospital provides both inpatient and outpatient procedures, although the latter comprises 60% of surgeries at the hospital, according to NYU Langone Health Senior Vice President Dr. Andrew Brotman.
"On the inpatient side, the cases are more complex, requiring more equipment," Brotman told Crain's. "It makes it much more efficient to have the cases that are not like that [grouped] together and leave the hospital for the cases that require a longer recovery period."
NYU Langone continues its expansion activities, after the health system signed a 25-floor lease at 222 East 41st St. in Manhattan last year.
