Condos to Top Off East Village Synagogue
The Adas Yisroel Anshe Mezritch Synagogue at 415 East 6th St will stay open, financed partly by proceeds from three luxury condo units above the sanctuary, the Daily News reports. The house of worship had been on the chopping block in 2012, but developer East River Partners came along with a plan to refurbish the sanctuary and add three residences, which will go on the market in the fall. East River’s Jody Kriss told the News the project caught community flack at first, until folks saw that his firm would preserve the 105-year-old building. ERP paid the synagogue $1.2M for a 99-year lease of the upper floors and will pay maintenance fees to keep it running for the next 200 years. (Just enough time to memorize our Torah portion.)
