A New 19-Story Mixed-Use Could Be Going Up Soon In Chelsea
A parking lot at 211 West 29th St in Chelsea could soon be turned into a 19-story, mixed-use building, adding to the infusion of new residential buildings that came online in the neighborhood last year.
The 210-foot building would have 42 apartments spread over roughly 40k SF, along with 2,500 SF of retail, NY Yimby reports. It will include some light amenities like bike storage, laundry and a gym. The developer is Alex Bernstein, who’s owned the 4,500 SF lot since 2001.
Ironstate is building a 21-story tower a few blocks over at 221 West 29th St, also on the site of a former parking lot. The area is zoned for manufacturing and commercial, but a few years back the city altered the zoning code to allow new residential buildings without developers having to seek a variance or zoning change, in some cases.
Both projects should also benefit from RXR's plan to create 50k SF of retail space at the nearby Starrett-Lehigh building on West 27th, which looks set to revitalize Chelsea's retail scene when it comes online in the next few years. [NYY]
