Mystery Buyer Nabs Lauren Bacall's Dakota Building Apartment
A mystery buyer has purchased the nine-room apartment in the Dakota building that the late actress Lauren Bacall called home for more than a half-century. The 4k SF pad in the venerable (though reportedly haunted) Upper West Side building was initially listed for $26M following her death last August at age 89, but was later lowered to $23.5M. The sale price and buyer were not disclosed, according to the New York Daily News, which first reported the transaction. Bacall reportedly paid just $48k for the apartment in 1961, the same year she married her second husband, Jason Robards Jr.
Bacall guarded her apartment from would-be photo-takers, and she apparently didn't change much inside, so it still has original details, like mahogany paneling (visible in this photo), hardwood floors and detailed woodwork. Bacall's former neighbor, singer Roberta Flack, listed her apartment for $9.5M in May. [NYDN]
