Starbucks Rules Manhattan, Dunkin' Dominates The Boroughs
Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts seem to have reached an understanding—the green goddess rules in Manhattan, while Dunkin' utterly dominates the other boroughs.
Dunkin'—far and away the most ubiquitous chain in all of NYC—has 568 stores throughout the city. Meanwhile Starbucks has 307 locations citywide, but a whopping 220 of those are concentrated in Manhattan.
That’s despite the fact that boutique competitors like Blue Bottle, Stumptown, Gregory’s and Grumpy’s have been taking a bite out of Starbucks’ upper crust target market, the New York Observer reports. All in all, chains seem to be holding their own these days in New York, with the total number increasing by 1% citywide—to 7,550 from 7,473—from last year.
Dunkin' Donuts leads the pack, followed by MetroPCS with 323 locations, and Duane Reade, Starbucks and Walgreens all tied at 307. Meanwhile McDonald’s has 232 locations, while T-Mobile has 217. [NYO]
