Weill Cornell Plans 17-Story Apartment Tower On Upper East Side
Cornell’s medical school is building new student apartments on the Upper East Side.
Weill Cornell Medical College has filed plans with the city to build a 17-story, 221-unit building at 1393 York Ave. between 74th and 75th streets, PincusCo. Media reports. The school would redevelop the church currently on the site, which the college paid Church of the Epiphany $68M for almost three years ago.
The college puts the total cost for the project at $118M, according to the plan filed with the Department of Buildings, and states that it doesn't plan to demolish more than 50% of the building or remove any floors. The church was constructed in 1936.
Weill Cornell’s student housing options, including dormitories and apartments, are currently located across six locations nearby: 445 East 69th St., 420 East 70th St., 417-423 East 64th St., 442-444 East 77th St. and 1 East Loop Road on Roosevelt Island. The school is located at 1300 York Ave.
The new housing complex is one of several projects for medical institutions underway in the area. Extell Development Co. plans to start construction on a 30-story tower along First Avenue between 79th and 80th Street next year. Half of the building will be occupied by the Hospital for Special Surgery when it opens, which is projected to happen in 2025.
