Report: U.S. Retail Absorption Suffers Worst Quarter Since RecessionThe U.S. retail real estate sector took it on the chin during the second quarter. Net absorption hit negative 3.8M SF nationwide for the quarter, the worst quarterly total in nine years, according to Reis Inc. As recently as Q4 2017, Reis data put net absorption at a positive 3.6M SF, and in Q1 2018, the total was a positive 896K SF. "The negative net absorption figure was especially significant," Reis Senior Economist Barbara Denham said. "Developers and investors will hesitate to make any new decisions to build, expand or invest in retail space, which is a healthy reaction to an over-retailed market." |
