What The World Series Earthquake Taught Us: Building Better Buildings 28 Years After Natural Disaster

Nearly 30 years ago, San Francisco faced one of the biggest natural disasters in its history. The Loma Prieta earthquake had struck, buildings were destroyed and vulnerabilities were revealed. Years later, the Bay Area is building better buildings based on lessons learned, but while some buildings are ready for "The Big One" others still have a long way to go.

It was 5:04 p.m. on Oct. 17, 1989. The Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants were warming up before the third game of the World Series. First Offices, Then Apartments, Now Gyms? WeWork Launches New Wellness Concept

WeWork is turning up the heat on its competitors with a new wellness and fitness concept, which it is calling Rise by We, that opens to the public Tuesday.

The co-working giant is making moves to attract larger, more established companies to its community of startups and entrepreneurs; it recently signed a deal with computer giant IBM to manage a full office building in Manhattan on its behalf. Recent studies show 20% of WeWork's membership is made up of companies with 1,000 employees or more.

Adding wellness and fitness facilities to its arsenal will make WeWork more appealing to a broader range of companies, said Cushman & Wakefield Executive Managing Director Arthur Draznin, who represents office landlords and tenants in lease negotiations.

Las Vegas Shooting Means Rethinking High-Rises Near Public Venues

Stadium and public venue owners and operators have a new nightmare to worry about in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

High-density mixed-use projects with hotel and multifamily towers overlooking concert venues or stadiums are springing up all over the country. They sate consumers' desire for walkable and experiential environments and command premium rents.

Oct. 1 in Las Vegas crystallized deadly possibilities in these developments. Although the attack was a wake-up call for the industry, experts believe these types of projects will not fall out of favor.
