Ross Bryan's New President On Structural Engineering Challenges And Being The Girl With The Tool Kit

Ross Bryan Associates, the Nashville-based structural engineer for Music City Center, the Raleigh Convention Center and a number of buildings on the UT Knoxville and Belmont University campuses, recently tapped Ibba Surface as its new president. She has been with Ross Bryan since 1979, and is the first woman to lead the 67-year-old firm.

Bisnow talked with her about the state of her profession, a largely unheralded part of the construction industry.

For SB Architects president Scott Lee, luxury hotel design is about creating a sense of place. Destination hotels are no longer about kitschy design and tacky décor, but about creating a one-of-a-kind experience.

Designing hotels has long been Lee's passion. At Cal Polytechnic State University, his thesis was on large-scale real estate development with an emphasis on hotels. He joined SB Architects 17 years ago because the firm wanted to build a hospitality practice. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority manages one of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world. Known as the Exchange Fund, it manages over $456B in assets and focuses on steadying the exchange value of the Hong Kong dollar.
