In Their Own Words: What It's Really Like
To Be A Woman In Commercial Real Estate

There is something missing in the C-suite corner offices and late night deal-making sessions of the commercial real estate industry: women.

Men dominate the jobs that start with “chief” or end with “VP,” and according to CREW Network, the income gap between men and women in the industry is 23.3%. In the C-suite it is worse. At Bisnow, we are proud that more than half of our employees are women, yet we struggle to diversify our senior ranks, and fill our event panels each year, with more women. As evidenced by the scores of women who now sit at the heads of boardroom tables, career trajectories for women have improved, but the oft-whispered grievance that it's just one big “old boys' club” survives. A palpable sense of disrespect, fear and frustration persists as women continue to grapple with wage disparity, sexism, upward mobility and sexual harassment. Some women feel left out, left behind and, at times, voiceless.

Bisnow reached out to dozens of women from New York, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas — and everywhere in between — and granted them anonymity to answer one question: What is it really like to be a woman in this industry? These are the voices of 22 of the most powerful women in U.S. commercial real estate. They have developed, financed, designed and built some of the biggest properties in North America — and they have something to say.

Erik Dolan-Del Vecchio and Karen Jordan

For those anxiously awaiting the completion of the Inglewood NFL stadium, the wait has just gotten longer.

Builders broke ground on the stadium that will become the home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers in November, but developers said record rainfall has delayed opening day almost a full year.

Originally expected to open in 2019, the Inglewood stadium is now set to open its doors at the beginning of the 2020 NFL season, the Los Angeles Times reports. The $2.6B stadium was selected to host Super Bowl LV in…

NAA Launches Grass-Roots Campaign, Calls On Lawmakers To Keep CRE Impact In Mind During Tax Reform

The country is on the verge of its first major tax overhaul in 30 years. Both the White House and Congress have submitted proposals to make sweeping changes to tax policy that will impact corporations and individuals alike.

In preparation for this overhaul, the National Apartment Association and the National Multifamily Housing Council launched a national grass-roots campaign Monday, mobilizing apartment industry players — from frontline employees to owners — to reach out to lawmakers about the potential effects tax reform could have on commercial real estate, multifamily in particular.

Experts Gather To Float Fantasy Island Ideas

Floating, self-sustaining islands free from the problems of land captured the imagination of entrepreneurs when Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel announced his financial backing for The Seasteading Institute in 2008. For nearly a decade they have remained a dream.

That dream has never been closer than it was at the first-ever floating island conference last week.
