Boomtime For The San Diego Suburbs, But Construction And Housing Costs Are Putting The Squeeze On

The growth of suburban San Diego, both north and south, has been strong in recent years, even as the resurgence of Downtown San Diego has been getting most of the attention. 

According to the speakers at Bisnow's Future of San Diego Suburbs on Tuesday, businesses and residents want to be in the suburbs, but costs are escalating — just as they have in Downtown San Diego in recent years — in ways that are putting the squeeze on the suburbs.

The North County suburban speakers said employers are attracted to this part of the San Diego market because they can still afford the office space and employees can afford to live here — for now.  Rents are competitive, at least…

Women On Boards: New Law Could Shape The Makeup Of CRE Boardrooms

Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire has long noticed a problem: There are no women on the boards of one-fourth of all the companies on the Russell 3000 index, which monitors the largest publicly traded companies in the U.S.

It is an issue her organization and others are trying to address. Now a new California law could help create more diversity at the highest levels of corporate America, including some of the country's largest commercial real estate companies.

“Traditionally, especially in the real estate business, corporate boards wanted chief executive officers on their boards, and many women have not been CEOs until recently,” said Berkhemer-Credaire, who is CEO of 2020 Women on Boards, an advocacy group that wants…

Mattress Firm Issues Ultimatum To Landlords As Battle Over Bankruptcy Closures Begins

The largest mattress retailer in the U.S. is closing hundreds of stores as it attempts to restructure its business while going through bankruptcy. It has also now given many of its remaining landlords an ultimatum: significantly lower the rent or lose the location.

On a conference call earlier this month, a recording of which was obtained by Bisnow, CEO Steve Stagner told an audience of Mattress Firm's retail landlords that the retailer would ask them for lower rental rates without any negotiation, or face possible closures.
