For College Students, Lack Of Affordable Housing Is A Big Issue

Ten years ago, Temple University Professor of Higher Education Policy and Sociology Sara Goldrick-Rab was conducting a series of interviews asking students about some of the pressing issues they were facing on college campuses.

She and her team thought it was just going to be a survey on the need for more financial aid and gripes about the cost of books and high tuition, but they uncovered something much more concerning. During the interviews, Goldrick-Rab found that several university and community college students were facing severe housing insecurity and homelessness.

“The trouble they were having was not tuition and books, it was they didn't have enough to eat and they didn't have a safe place to live,” Goldrick-Rab said. “This was just in Wisconsin and later we started going out…

CoStar Starts Going After Password-Sharing Users In Latest Legal Blitz

CoStar Group is following through on its threat to sue individuals who steal access to its platform. 

The $14B, D.C.-based commercial real estate data giant filed seven lawsuits Wednesday evening in six different federal courts against real estate professionals based in New Jersey, California, Oregon, Texas and Georgia. 

The lawsuits allege that individuals who did not pay for CoStar's platform obtained user names and passwords to its subscription database from authorized users. It says they then used the platform to access information on hundreds of properties for their own business purposes. CoStar said it contacted each individual and offered a resolution in which they would sign up for a subscription and pay for their past use, but it said they declined.

Mattress Firm Files For Bankruptcy, To Immediately Shutter 200-Plus Stores

America's largest mattress retailer has filed for bankruptcy, with plans to close up to 700 stores in the U.S. to save itself from mounting debt and rent obligations.

Mattress Firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware Friday morning. It will shutter an initial 200 stores across the country within the next few days. Mattress Firm tapped A&G Realty Partners to handle the store closures.

The move, which has been expected for a few weeks, will allow the retailer to close inefficient store locations while continuing to pay its vendors and employees without interruption, the company stated in a release.

Like 'Summer Of '69': Economists React To September Jobs Report On Twitter

Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 134,000 jobs in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, marking the country's 96th straight month of employment gains. The unemployment rate fell to 3.7%, its lowest since 1969. 

Job gains in professional and business services, and in the healthcare industry, showed the highest gains in September. Construction employment also continued its upward trend, adding 23,000 jobs in September. The construction industry has added 315,000 jobs in the past 12 months.
