When the Rev. Arnold Townsend was a teenager, he would drive up to San Francisco from Los Angeles in his friend's 1955 Chevy. He and his friend would set out on a Friday and spend the weekend partying up and down Fillmore Street. There was a nightlife in Los Angeles, but nothing quite like San Francisco, he said.
