Talent Key To Making Toronto North America's Fastest-Growing Tech Market

Toronto is North America's fastest-growing tech market and its second-cheapest, according to a new CBRE report.

Overall, the fifth annual CBRE Scoring Tech Talent Report, which ranks 50 U.S. and Canadian markets on attracting and growing tech talent, found Toronto had leaped six positions from No. 12  to sixth, behind leaders San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Washington and Atlanta.

The report concludes Toronto's growing talent employment base, which set the pace with a leading 22,500 new tech jobs in 2015-16, as a key factor in its rise. “We're growing our talent domestically,” said Werner Dietl, CBRE Canada executive vice…

The Olympics Are Notoriously Bad For Cities, But London 2012 Was A Huge Real Estate Success

The Olympics have become famously bad for real estate.

Numerous academic studies have shown the games offer no net economic benefits to a host city, and the cost and complexity of holding them is rising. The legacy of the 2004 Athens Olympics is hundreds of acres of abandoned facilities that may never come back into use. That of Rio is of spiralling costs and myriad corruption trials.

But at a time when it seems no one wants the Olympics in their city, it is worth looking back on the real estate legacy of the London 2012 games — a rip-roaring success.

Earlier this month the International Olympic Committee took the unprecedented step of naming the host cities for two upcoming Olympics rather than just one, and Paris and Los Angeles will host the games in 2024 and 2028.The move may be due…

Is There A Real Estate Solution To E-Commerce's Returns Problem?

E-commerce is the single biggest driver of the industrial real estate market and growing, but it has a glaring inefficiency. If we get everything we need delivered to our homes, why is it so difficult to send it back?

Distribution centers are being built all over the country, many as big-box facilities that in some cases require clearance of up to 40 feet. Last-mile distribution centers, designed to be leaner to make use of tighter spaces close to major cities, are beginning to crop up — like a rumored Amazon warehouse close to the University of Pennsylvania's campus in West Philadelphia. Real estate is changing shape to better fit e-commerce, but only the sexy part. Returns are still a worry.

Obamacare Repeal Could Cripple Rural Hospitals And Lead To More Closures

There is a perfect storm raging in the healthcare industry that has caused a slew of hospitals to close across the country. Healthcare reform and changing business models are at the forefront of those challenges.

Approximately 2,300 rural hospitals are in the United States. Of those, 81 have closed since 2010, according to the North Carolina Rural Health Research Program. Because rural populations tend to be poorer, these hospitals rely heavily on Medicaid reimbursement, which has been dispersed in greater quantity since the Obama administration passed the Affordable Care Act.
