New Life For The Guvernment?
Remember last week that we wrote about the end of the Guvernment nightclub and Koolhaus Entertainment complex, iconic in the eyes of many, host over the years for such A-List performers as Coldplay, Lady Gaga, and the Rolling Stones? Well it might be channeling the indestructible spirit of Keith Richards.
Word was that developers had bought the land and had plans for a new mixed-use development. Doors will be closed this Jan. 31. Well, not so fast (maybe)! After news broke this week that Daniels Corp was the developer taking over the site and building the mixed-use development, INK Entertainment's Charles Khabouth, the club owner, says he's working on something new, a bigger and better Guvernment. Stay tuned.
Green Is Good
The folks at Oxford Properties Group are taking a few bows this morning with the new environmental initiatives in their buildings being recognized by others in the industry. (It's like being named Prom Queen, except this will matter in five years.) Oxford is the only Canadian developer to be named a Green Lease Leader, an inaugural program started by the Institute for Market Transformation and the US Department of Energy's Better Buildings Alliance to recognize property owners, tenants, and brokers who use lease clauses as a tool to save energy in commercial buildings across all property types.
Oxford SVP and managing director Andrew McAllan, a 40-year industry vet, oversees the retrofitting of Oxford buildings into LEED-certified structures. In a hectic world, it's nice to get a pat on the back for what they're doing, he told us this morning. “Our green lease aligns with our commitment to LEED as our core operating standard and is a demonstration of our shared leadership with our tenants to develop and operate efficient, green buildings.” In the image is Oxford's 111 Richmond St.
CREW!
Over 160 real estate pros were out at MaRS Discovery District on College Street for a Toronto CREW event featuring CIBC World Markets managing director and chief economist Dr. Avery Shenfeld, who delivered his economic review and forecast at a lunch. (It was too much information for just one microphone.)
Dr. Shenfeld also accepted an honourary membership in Toronto CREW. In the image is DREAM Unlimited, Office REIT VP leasing Samantha Farrell (and past president), Dr. Shenfeld, McCarthy Tetrault partner Tara Piurko (and current Toronto CREW president), and Oxford Properties Group VP, property accounting, Kim Lanthier.
At The Core Of It All
And these images are from a Corenet event this week, showcasing a panel of REmmy award winners, talking about leadership practices, motivating CRE teams, innovative workplaces and sustainability. Snapped is Humber College's Nick Heibein, CBRE's Sarah Clare, Alexis Hur, and Bill Hebburn.
Snapped here is Gensler's Rosanne Dube, TD Bank Group Real Estate Operations AVP Kevin Greene, and Perkins and Will's John Potter. The event attracted around 100 industry pros and was held at the National Club on Bay Street.
Calling All Reporters
We're looking for the Bisnow face of Canada (and it doesn't have to be as beautiful as Ryan Gosling's or Rachel McAdams'). We're in need of a Vancouver/Toronto commercial real estate reporter, with a strong journalism background and a passion for writing. You have the gift for delivering groundbreaking real estate news in our breezy but super-informative manner. You live to break stories, work a beat, travel, uncover market trends, and rub elbows with the most powerful people in the industry. Send your journalism-oriented resume to: matt.black@bisnow.com
Nice bit of work by Randy Carlyle's agent. The Leafs coach misses the playoffs (47 years and counting) yet they give the dude a two-year contract extension. Email mark.keast@bisnow.com
