FBI Reversal Comes At Tumultuous Time For Prince George's County

It seemed like Prince George’s County had finally landed the massive economic development victory it had long been waiting for in the fall of 2023 when the federal government selected it as the site for a new $3.5B FBI headquarters.

That plan is now likely dead after President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that his administration intends to stop the headquarters move.

The reversal was a huge disappointment for a county that has historically garnered less public and private investment than its neighbors — and was hoping the headquarters would spark an economic renaissance.

“It was what the Pentagon was to Northern Virginia,” said David Iannucci, who until Dec. 31 led the Prince George's County Economic Development Corp.

Today's Rundown

Pets In Housing: A new D.C. law aims to lift burdens facing renters with pets. Passed by the D.C. Council last year, the Pets in Housing Amendment Act of 2024 was approved by Congress on Thursday, WUSA9 reported. The law puts caps on the rents and deposits landlords can impose on renters with pets. It also outlaws breed and size discrimination and mandates at least one pet-friendly shelter in the city. The law goes into effect on Oct. 1. Read more.

Dupont Circle HQ Renovation: The Amalgamated Transit Union is preparing to renovate the 1970s-era headquarters building it purchased last year that faces Dupont Circle. Its architect, KOr.10 Architecture, filed plans with the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board for the 55K SF property at 21 Dupont Circle NW. Those plans include adding a bridge between the two wings, installing an activated roof terrace and replacing the glass facade. Read more.

The Finish Line

International development contractor Chemonics is laying off 500 D.C. employees, it said in a WARN notice first reported this morning by the Washington Business Journal. It is the latest fallout from the Trump administration’s efforts to gut USAID, the effects of which are rippling through contractors across the region.

What this means for its 287K SF custom-built Navy Yard headquarters has yet to be determined. Last March, it was already looking to sublease more than half of its footprint, Bisnow first reported.
