All Roads Lead to ARTIC
The Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center has a spiffy acronym, ARTIC. But the project (which recently broke ground) from the City of Anaheim and the Orange County Transportation Authority isn't just a pretty name: the $184M facility will handle no fewer than 10 kinds of transportation, some of which are still on the drawing board (11 if you count people arriving on Segways).

ARTIC will accommodate high-speed rail, California/Nevada maglev trains, Metrolink and Amtrak trains, OCTA local bus service, Ontario International Airport remote check-in FlyAway bus service, Anaheim Resort Shuttles, the Anaheim Rapid Connection, the Resort Streetcar System, and taxi service. The long-term plan for the area also includes retail, entertainment, office, hospitality, and residential uses in multiple phases over the next 20 years. The project was designed by HOK and Parsons Brinckerhoff.

The ARTIC Mixed-Use District is not just about transit, KTGY's Ken Ryan, who heads up the firm's Community Planning and Urban Design Studio, tells us (not long ago, he enjoyed the 49ers v.Packers at Lambeau Field with his twins, Robert and Tommy). “It's about community building and applying the fundamentals of neighborhoods in an urban setting,” Ken says. “The station has the potential to serve as a catalyst for urban development in the immediate area."
