Diamondbacks, County Quarrel Over Stadium Lease
The Arizona Diamondbacks are suing Maricopa County about the lease at Chase Field, which the county owns. Among other things, the team and the county are at odds over repairs and renovations to the ballpark. The team is asserting that the 1998 stadium — built partly at public expense — needs various repairs.
D-backs attorney Leo Beus told the Phoenix Business Journal the team isn't seeking damages, nor taxpayer funding. “They are asking the court for the ability to remove the contract restriction that prevents the Diamondbacks from exploring other stadium options,” he said.
By contrast, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors chairman Clint Hickman said the team simply wants out of the contract, which obliges the team to play ball at Chase through the 2028 season. “Saying the facility is in disrepair is outrageous," he said. [PBJ]
