Walmart Supercenter Landing In Metrocenter Mall Next Spring
Walmart, which already employs 35,000 people in Arizona, broke ground on a new Supercenter at Metrocenter Mall last week. The project will be 148k SF and will add 250 employees to Walmart’s growing tally. The site was previously occupied by a Broadway store but has been vacant since 2006 and was demolished this year.
The incoming Walmart Supercenter will be the largest investment the Metrocenter Mall has seen in decades. The area could see major transformation soon, following Phoenix City Council’s approval of various zoning changes last month. Updated zoning would allow for office, senior housing, multifamily housing and healthcare facilities, the Arizona Republic reports.
Walmart came forward with plans to close 269 stores nationwide in January, but none of Arizona’s 128 stores were on that list. [AR]
