    International Rose Test Garden

    Check out the world's roses at the largest rose garden in the United States, founded in 1889. Blooming between April and October, the roses of the International Rose Test Garden are sure to make for a romantic and sweet-smelling atmosphere this summer.

    PDX Adult Soap Box Derby

    Revisit childhood memories this August as a volunteer or a spectator at Portland's Adult Soap Box Derby. With a minimum requirement of three wheels, these vehicles are bound to be quite the spectacle. The deadline to sign up as a participant was in April, but we're confident you'll have a blast on Mt. Tabor as an observer, scoping out the competition for next year.

    The 'Freaky-but-true' Peculiarium and Museum

    The self-described "freaky-but-fascinating collection of Sci-Fi art exhibits, historical oddities, and celebration of urban legends," The Peculiarium is a great way to get out of the sun this summer. Plus, it's free if you wear an interesting costume (or $5 otherwise). Children are advised to stay at home but canine family members are welcome.

    Pittock Mansion

    Visit the home of The Oregonian's founder and experience early 20th Century affluence at the Pittock Mansion, which also is available to rent for social gatherings. Built in 1914, the mansion sits on 46 acres and was purchased by the City of Portland in 1964. If you've toured the estate before, you might check out the "Behind the Scenes Tour" to see a little more.

    Living Room Theaters

    If you're planning to see a movie, take a break from the sticky floors of traditional theaters this summer and check out Living Room Theaters. It offers gourmet food (see more dining options here) and a wide array of libations as well as squashy armchairs and footrests. The theater plays indie and foreign films as well as more popular films, including Alice Through the Looking Glass.

    Sunday Parkways

    Portland's streets will close a few more times this summer to allow for bikers and pedestrians to enjoy the city traffic-free thanks to Sunday Parkways. Intersections along the route feature local nonprofit organizations offering more information about their causes and creating engaging scenery. About 20,000 people are expected to participate at each event.

    Portland's Japanese Garden

    Escape from the hustle and bustle of summer and spend a day at the Japanese Garden, known for its serene and quiet ambiance. Get an awesome view of Mt. Hood and stroll through 5.5 acres of streams and landscaping, then check out the authentic Japanese tea house.
