California Vintners Snapping Up Oregon Wineries
Ponte Family Estate, a family-owned winery in the southern California city of Temecula, acquired Hawks View Cellars, a Sherwood winery. Hawks View, founded in 2007 by Jack Kemp, his wife, Wille, and their son, A.J., focuses on Willamette Valley pinot gris and pinot noir.
The deal is the latest in a string of acquisitions of Oregon wineries by California wineries, the Portland Business Journal reports. Earlier this month, Santa Rosa, California-based Vintage Wine Estates acquired the Firesteed brand of Willamette Valley winery Firesteed Cellars, and last fall, Jackson Family Wines of California bought WillaKenzie Estate soon after it had acquired Penner-Ash Wine Cellars.
“While we will be making some changes to the tasting room and planting some new vineyards, our goal is to not replace their experience, but rather enhance it, and do so in a way that is true to Oregon,” Ponte Family Estate founder Claudio Ponte said in a statement about the Hawks View deal.
M Realty's Peter Bouman brokered the transaction. Terms were not disclosed.
