The Wait For Google Fiber Isn't Over Yet
Google Fiber’s long-awaited Portland debut has been delayed indefinitely. For at least another several months, Google’s plans to bring superfast internet to the city won’t be official. Google had been preparing to formally announce its plans, in the works since 2014, this fall.
The City of Portland approved a franchise agreement extending Google Fiber’s authorization to operate until 2026, The Oregonian reports. A wired network for Portland is estimated to cost Google about $300M.
Google Fiber recently acquired Webpass, an internet service provider that uses point-to-point wireless service to connect buildings. The company has leased fiber from private or utility companies in other cities. It is possible that Google Fiber is considering these options for Portland, delaying its formal announcement to evaluate their feasibility. [TO]
