We also chatted last week with Capt Jim Wink, who recently retired from the US Navy to sign up as a VP with RBF Consulting. As assistant office manager in San Diego, his broad responsibilities include office operations and matching the firm's growing services to the needs of clients. (After last October?s merger with Michael Baker Corp, the engineering and planning firm added more transportation and architecture services.) Right now, RBF is on the construction management team for the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan down by the Pier. Jim tells us the firm also was a key player in the initial document prep for the $394M hospital replacement project at Camp Pendleton, now under construction by Clark/McCarthy right on the 5 Freeway.

RBF was the master designer for the Liberty Station project in Point Loma, formerly known as the Naval Training Center. That transformed the facility into a historic district, housing, shops, and restaurants, ?and now a bunch of businesses are thriving on what used to be a naval base.? Jim has plenty of experience managing large orgs and workforces. In his previous role as executive officer of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command-Southwest, he was responsible for a 3,500-person operation with a $3B annual business volume. In January 2010, Jim was deployed on short notice to Haiti to serve as the joint task force engineer leading US engineering efforts in the initial quake response. He and his wife have two boys in high school and middle school; in the fall, he'll be an assistant football coach at the local high school.
