Something Big Coming in Carlsbad?
October 1, 2012
After Caruso Affiliated picked up 48 acres in Carlsbad, we tracked down SVP Matt Middlebrook to see what might pop up at the northeast corner of I-5 and Cannon Road. (Our prediction: a one-acre store for every contiguous state.) |
It's Caruso?s first foray into the San Diego market. Matt, who oversees development, says it's been interested in San Diego County for quite some time: ?This one came together.? He calls Carlsbad a terrific opportunity with a great downtown area, great businesses, and great scenery. The company bought the acreage, designated in the city's general plan as tourist/recreation commercial, from SDG&E. The strawberry farming that's on a portion of the site won't jam things up: The future development plan will preserve agricultural use on Cannon, along with designated open space. |
LA-based Caruso is known for developing upscale retail, dining, and entertainment destinations that create plenty of buzz (and dollars, with sales/SF 75% higher than the shopping center industry?s national average). Matt says the company plans to work with the community and elected officials to understand exactly what they have in mind. The company is meeting almost daily with various members of the community to gather input. Outside of work, Matt, who works out of Caruso?s San Francisco office (but is so busy he has little time to develop much color), is a runner as well as a huge fan of the Giants. |
