With the Feb. 27 reopening of Carlsbad’s newly renovated Georgina Cole Library on Carlsbad Village Drive, work will begin on the Carlsbad City Library (rendering above), which is also known as Dove Library because it’s on Dove Lane. The renovations are part of an $11M budget allocation to improve two of the city’s three libraries.

Upgrades to the 49-year-old Georgina Cole Library include WiFi and other technology enhancements, accessibility improvements and a new Friends of the Library bookstore. Improvements to the 17-year-old Dove Library, which will be completed by mid-2016, include a patio and café, gathering areas for teens and young adults, a remodeled auditorium and a new Friends of the Library bookstore, according to the San Diego Business Journal. Libraries have a wider role these days than book repositories.

San Diego-based Group 4 Architecture designed improvements for both facilities with Prava Construction Services serving as general contractor. Locally based Solatube is providing energy-efficient lighting upgrades. [SDBJ
