Nominate Orchids & Onions: Have A Say In The Aesthetics Of Your Neighborhood
The San Diego Architectural Foundation is accepting nominations for the 40th Annual Orchids & Onions awards. Members of the public are encouraged to submit their picks for this year’s “Best Orchid” and “Worst Onion.” These awards recognize the best and worst architectural design, form and function in five categories: architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, interior design, and miscellaneous—public art, lighting, graphics, and so forth. The J Craig Venter Institute, above, was a 2015 Orchid.
“Great design and great development create great neighborhoods,” says SDAF president and principal at De Bartolo + Rimanic Design Studio Pauly De Bartolo. “This is a critical time as San Diego debates how to accommodate future growth and considers several landmark projects. Everybody should come out and voice their opinions about what they think represents a good built environment.”
Orchids & Onions provides an opportunity for members of the general public to have a say in the evolution and design of their neighborhoods, helping to set a standard for future projects. Anyone can nominate local projects loved or loathed, by posting photos of projects with a description online at the Orchids & Onions website. Eligible projects were built within the last three years and are nonresidential or multifamily projects of four or more units.
Nominations close July 31. Awards will be announced at a reception and awards ceremony Oct. 13 at Horton Park Plaza and Spreckels Theater.
