SD Airport Opening New Consolidated, One-Stop Rental Car Center Jan. 20
A newly completed $316M consolidated Rental Car Center is opening at San Diego International airport next week, which initially will be occupied by 14 rental car brands, but there is space for five more companies.
Situated on more than 25 acres at 3355 Admiral Boland Way on the north side of the airport, the 2M SF facility has two customer lobbies, five interior and exterior public art installations, and space for a restaurant of 8k SF to seat about 300 people. There is a four-level parking deck that can hold 5,400 cars, with fueling, maintenance and car-washing operations to be run by the rental firms, according to the San Diego Business Journal.
Designed to achieve LEED Silver certification, the facility will be served by 16 energy-efficient shuttle buses with a 25-passenger capacity, replacing the more than 80 buses currently operated by rental companies from various locations throughout the airport and Downtown area. Airport officials report the facility created 4,600 construction jobs, but the number of on-site permanent jobs is undetermined so far. [SDBJ]
