Navy No Longer Considering Large-Scale Migrant Detention Center In Concord
The Trump administration won’t proceed with plans to build a detention center for undocumented immigrants at the former Concord Naval Weapons Station, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
U.S. Rep. Mark DeSaulnier said in statement Wednesday that sources from the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that a facility will not be built in Concord. DeSaulnier, who represents the area, originally voiced concerns about the plan due to a lack of infrastructure and inhabitable land.
The potential detention center also produced public outcry in Concord with city officials and residents opposing the plan.
A Navy memo obtained by TIME last week reported potential plans to build a large-scale temporary detention center in Concord to house 47,000 undocumented migrants.
Concord has been in negotiations with the federal government to purchase the land over the last 12 years. The city partnered with Lennar to build a master-planned development with 12,000 housing units and 6.1M SF of commercial space.
Other sites in Florida, Alabama and Arizona were discussed in the memo to house thousands of immigrants recently apprehended while crossing the southern U.S. border illegally. The Navy prepared the memo to inform senior leadership on sites that could be considered, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
