A division of Sares Regis Group of Northern California just wrapped up construction on AFL–CIO Building Investment Trust's 888 San Mateo. The 158-unit luxury apartment community is now 70% leased and 60% occupied. Average rents are between $2,600 and $4,000/month. The site, a former auto dealership vacant for almost 10 years, caused some interesting design challenges. TCA Architects CEO Thom Cox says adjacent railroad tracks caused the project to be split into two linear buildings with a single underground parking garage, allowing for street-level residential units with stoops. The complex is shooting for LEED Platinum certification.
