Giants Season Brings Out Development Bats

The Giants are back in full swing at AT&T Park, and we were invited for the premier real estate event to kick off the season. Plus, we found out more about the hottest projects in Mission Bay. The boys may be starting slow, but development is in mid-season form.

Things are looking up at McCarthy's China Basin, with Dropbox filling the fifth floor space UCSF is leaving behind. Last night we caught up with McCarthy Cook EVP of development Michael Freeman, SCB's Gordon L'Estrange and BOMA's VP of public policy Ken Cleaveland at the annual party thrown by BOMA. Gordon did some of the interiors at China Basin, where Dropbox is a big tenant. McCarthy Cook VP Richard Hayes told us all about the building last fall.

Michael tells us there are some notable projects getting underway nearby, including the new emergency center that just debuted across the river. Last night's pre-game was a packed house, with some 500 people from all walks of real estate chowing down on hot dogs and downing beer before the game. (Arizona won 7-6.)

Here's the view across the way, where Block 1—aka a big (and much needed) hotel development—is teed up to start any day now, Michael says. And as for China Basin, he admits rents are some of the highest in town (in the $80s/SF for upper floors), but he says being next to the World Series champs is worth it and lots of offers are coming in for the open space.
