Mayor: No Action on Office Space Squeeze Until Study Complete
San Francisco will run out of space to allocate for large offices due to a 1986 office space cap, but changes to Prop M are on standby. Mayor Edwin Lee has ordered the planning department to complete a study by the end of the year before changes can be triggered.
“Until that study is done, I’m not going to signal any action. There shouldn’t be any action because it’s not that responsible to say this or that to one developer or another about that limitation,” Lee told the San Francisco Business Times.
The study will review the historical absorption of office space and where new space could be built. Significant changes to current policy would be presented to voters, and it’s unclear whether any small reforms would hold up to a legal challenge. [SFBT]
