BART's Getting a Big Bath
BART is getting a full-blown makeover, starting at the Powell Street Station this month. Last night, the transit group presented the game plan (science fair style) during rush hour. The station will get a thorough cleaning, one staffer tells us, with lots of painting, repairing cracks and new lighting. That obstructive steel fare station in the background will likely be relocated and spread against the wall. What could go in its place is a circular art installation. Ad sign boxes will go away for more visibility.
BART is in discussions with the city about ways to better connect passengers from the concourse to the landing, with ramps as an option. Its ceiling concept, expected to wrap up in 2016 to 2017, could have an 8x8-inch grid design. Also expect sustainable LED lighting and a screen to keep birds out. Check out the potential ceiling designs (bottom right).
