S.F. Seawall Could Cost $5B To Fix
San Francisco’s northern seawall is in need of repairs estimated to cost $5B. The Port Commission noted an earthquake could cause the seawall to fail. Given the forecast for the “next big one,” the report recommends work to finish within the next 10 years, according to Curbed.
The wall, finished in the early 20th century, is mostly built from landfill. The type of soil underneath compounds problems as it tends to “amplify shaking.” Earthquake retrofitting could cost as much as $3B alone.
Rising sea levels and seismic danger have spurred infrastructure projects throughout the country. [Curbed]
