Fremont School District Handing Out Report Cards to Developers
School leaders in the Fremont School District plan to start handing out report cards to project developers to bring attention to funding and overcrowding issues in the district.
District leaders are frustrated that some developers, who are required to pay $5.70 per SF of new construction to offset the cost of additional students under state law, are not covering the cost of adding more students. That’s a far cry from the $17.20 per SF the district says it costs to build additional schools to house those students, Inside Bay Area reports. Developers that cover the full cost will get A’s, while developers that only pay the minimum will receive F’s.
The problem of overcrowding will only get worse with an expected increase of 7,200 students due to additional development, partially due to BART expansion in the area. [IBA]
