Lawsuits Push Warriors To Delay Move To Mission Bay

Placeholder

The Golden State Warriors have delayed plans to move into a new Mission Bay arena by one year as the team fights lawsuits brought against the project by the Mission Bay Alliance.

The Warriors now say they plan to move from Oakland to Mission Bay for the 2019 season. The Mission Bay Alliance has fought the arena and surrounding office and retail development, arguing it would create traffic problems and the land would be better used for biotech surrounding UCSF.

One lawsuit argues UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood exceeded his authority in supporting the project, SF Gate reports. The other argues the city violated state environmental laws by not considering alternate locations and failed to address environmental impacts.

The Warriors project, expected to cost more than $1B, stands out because the team is building the arena with all private funds on private land without public subsidies. [SF Gate]
