New Tenants Sought for Lake Merced Gun Club Site

San Francisco is looking for new tenants to take over the site the Pacific Rod and Gun Club occupied for eight decades.

The Recreation and Park Commission plans to issue a request for proposals on 20-year leases for the 14-acre site. The location, Lake Merced West, is the watershed's largest area of flat land after the TPC Harding Golf Course.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, which owns the land, started a $22M cleanup of the site last year. The soil is contaminated by lead pellets and clay pigeons used by the club between 1934 and 1994, according to the S.F. Examiner. The gun club closed last April to allow for the cleanup; it will not submit a proposal for the site, though some members and past directors are pitching a plan that includes rowing, archery and a ropes course.

Applicants are asked to have at least five years' experience managing a similar business and successful completion of at least two development projects of similar size. [SFE]
