Grocer H Mart Taking Over Former 24 Hour Fitness Space In S.F.
International grocery chain H Mart, which opened its doors in San Francisco last year, wants to expand its 3995 Alemany Blvd. location by nearly 60%.
According to city planning documents filed by the grocery chain last month, the company is planning to add 27K SF to its existing 47K SF, according to the San Francisco Business Times.
The grocery chain will take over space previously occupied by 24 Hour Fitness, mirroring a national trend in which grocery stores have increasingly taken big-box space formerly used by companies that have gone through bankruptcy proceedings.
According to the filing, H Mart will expand into space on the ground and basement levels of the former gym.
The space has been vacant for two years, according to Michael Mossman, a construction and development director for Citivest Commercial Investments, which owns the shopping center, according to the San Francisco Business Times.
Grocery-anchored retail centers have grown rapidly in the wake of the pandemic, with investors heavily targeting a seemingly recession-proof tenant segment.
