Waymo's Latest Self-Driving Cars To Hit The Streets Later This Month
More automous cars are hitting the streets. Google’s self-driving startup Waymo, which spun off last month, plans to test its newest fleet of Chrysler Pacifica minivans on public roads later this month. Minivans would be tested in Mountain View and Phoenix, where Google’s self-driving Lexus SUVs have already driven thousands of miles over the past few years, according to The Verge.
Waymo CEO John Krafcik said during the recent North American International Auto Show that Waymo will create all the technology, including cameras, sensors and mapping technology, to keep costs down. Waymo has no interest in becoming an auto parts supplier, but it may partner with original equipment manufacturers like Chrysler and Honda to create fleets or retrofit cars with self-driving technology.
Waymo and Chrysler may eventually create an autonomous ride-sharing service using Google’s Waze mapping technology. [The Verge]
