HAVING MERCY
April 17, 2012
With Seattle's apartment boom in full swing, we've been wondering whether the world of affordable housing (something a bit less than the $3 per foot rents we've been hearing about) was experiencing something similar. The answer, in some places, is yes. Mercy Housing Northwest, for one, broke ground on its first affordable housing development in Seattle last summer in the nation's most diverse zip code. Columbia City Station Apartments will take advantage of the Columbia City light rail station (we bet developers had to stretch their brains to come up with that name). The SMR-designed complex, with 43 one-bedroom units and nine two bedrooms, is scheduled for delivery this fall. |
For larger low-income families, Mercy is working in tandem with Urban Impact to develop Impact Family Village, a mixed-use project in Rainier Beach that'll be geared toward families with children. The four-story building, with plenty of three-bedroom units, is expected around the end of 2013. In addition, Impact Family Village will have 12 units set aside for disabled residents and another 12 for large families. |
