HOTEL ANDRA: SOFT LUXURY
Craig Schafer has only owned the Hotel Andra for seven years, almost half of which has been spent in recession. But this December, the 1929 hotel (which he calls ?soft luxury?) has had ?surprisingly great? occupancy—about 90%. So somebody is doing something right. Perhaps it's the $3M bathroom renovation finished last year, in which 118 bathrooms were gutted; from tub to tiled, glass-enclosed showers, from light fixtures to electric mirrors, and swinging to sliding doors. If there are truly ghosts in the hotel (originally built as efficiency apartments), they haven?t revealed themselves to Craig. Something you might not know: Craig is a late-life father, and had his first child at 50 and the second at 55 (conveniently a boy and a girl). It's brought a change of pace; ?I don't work as many hours as I did when I was younger,? he says.
